What is an SMU?

The Keithley Source Measure Unit (SMU) is also known as Keithley SourceMeter®. It is an instrument that can precisely source voltage or current and simultaneously measure voltage and/or current. It integrates the capabilities of an individual power supply, a digital multimeter (DMM), a current source, and an electronic load into a single, tightly synchronized bench instrument.

Keithley offers the broadest choice of SMU instruments available. All Keithley SourceMeter® instruments are fully programmable while delivering higher precision, resolution, and flexibility ideal for materials research, semiconductor devices (transistor, BJT, diode, power MOSFET, power semi, LED), electronic circuits and more.


Overview

A Source Measure Unit (SMU) precisely sources and simultaneously measures voltage and/or current. Most well-established test applications include IV characterizing plus testing semiconductors and non-linear devices and materials.

These applications perform voltage sweep and/or current sweeps across any of the 4-quadrant operating regions (positive and negative DC/pulsed source or sink and measurement) of an SMU.

They typically involve high accuracy and high resolution, in addition to highly synchronized sourcing and measurement requirements.

An application that requires the integration of individual power supply, digital multimeter (DMM), current source, and/or electronic load will find using an SMU saves setup time, saves software development time, saves rack and bench space, increases throughput and achieve reliable and repeatable results 5 ½ and 6 ½ digits of resolution over a wide selection of power envelopes.

Creating Battery Discharge Profiles for Simulating Batteries with Keithley's 2450 SMU & 2281 Battery Simulator.

This video demonstrates how to create a model for a battery that can be used in a battery simulator. A 2281 Battery Simulator emulates a battery for this demonstration and a 2450 SourceMeter discharges the "battery" and creates the battery model. The 2450 could be substitiuted by a 2460 or 2461 SourceMeter.

The Keithley IVy mobile app is the fastest and easiest way to perform current-voltage (I-V) characterization, troubleshoot your device under test (DUT), and share the measurement results with others. It allows you to visualize, interact with, and share measurement results without programming.

IVy is currently compatible with Keithley Series 2600B SourceMeter® Source Measure Unit (SMU) Instruments This video details how to connect the Series 2600B SMU Instrument to an iPhone or iPad using Wi-Fi. The 2600B and the mobile device must be connected to the same wireless network. In this video, this is achieved by connecting the LAN port of the Series 2600B to a wireless router.
